CASTLE ADAMANT? WHERE’S THAT?
Why, it’s one of King Gama’s many country houses but we’re in some doubt as to the country of its location; some say Hungary. Who’s King Gama? Why he’s Princess Ida’s father. Who is Princess Ida? Why she’s the founder of a woman’s University, a novel idea in 1884 when Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera Princess Ida was first performed. Its story is based on Tennyson’s narrative poem The Princess and satirizes women’s education, feminism, and Darwinian evolution in the Victorian era
